Jon advises financial sponsors and public companies on media and investor relations, as well as mergers, restructurings, and other special situations. His areas of expertise include:

  • Financial Sponsors: He advises private equity and credit firms, as well as their portfolio companies, on strategic communications for investor and media relations, investment activity and fundraising efforts. Current and former clients include Apollo, Arena Investors, Aurora, Bernhard Capital, Blackstone, Cinven, Cornell Capital, EnCap, First Reserve, Fundamental Advisors, Gerding Edlen, Innovatus Capital, Kanders & Co., Kayne Anderson, L Catterton, Park Hill Group, Ridgewood Energy, Stonecourt Capital, Terra Capital Partners, Tower Three Partners, Warburg Pincus and Z Capital Partners.
  • Real Assets: He advises on transactions involving real estate, gaming and infrastructure. Current and former REIT clients include Affinity Gaming, Associated Estates, BRE, Campus Crest, ClubCorp, Chatham Lodging, First Potomac, Mack-Cali, Monogram, New York REIT, Pinnacle Entertainment, Regency Centers, RMR, Rouse, Strategic Hotels, WP Carey and WP Glimcher. He also advised Fundamental on the acquisition of the El San Juan hotel and sale of AutoZone park in Memphis; Z Capital on its acquisition of Affinity Gaming, Canyon Ranch Miami and Waldhaus Flims in Switzerland; Kayne Anderson on the acquisition of KKR-backed Sentio and sale of student housing to Temasek’s Mapletree and the GDB of Puerto Rico on its public-private program, including the San Juan Airport. Jon previously covered real estate, gaming and infrastructure as a reporter for both Bloomberg News and Reuters and began his career in real estate investment banking at DLJ and Credit Suisse.
  • M&A: Recent assignments include advising ClubCorp on its sale to Apollo; L Catterton on its investment in Equinox; Blackstone and CF Corp. on the acquisition of Fidelity & Guaranty Life; Kayne Anderson on the acquisition of KKR-backed Sentio and sale of student housing to Temasek’s Mapletree; EnCap on the sale of EagleClaw to Blackstone; Cornell Capital on the acquisition of World Kitchen; First Reserve on the sale of its infrastructure franchise to BlackRock; Anbang on the acquisition of Strategic Hotels from Blackstone; Rouse and Associated Estates on their sales to Brookfield; Catterton on its merger with L Capital; PJT on its merger with Blackstone’s advisory business; Z Capital on its acquisition of Affinity Gaming, Canyon Ranch Miami and Waldhaus Flims in Switzerland; Campus Crest on its sale to Harrison Street; Pinnacle on its sale of real estate to GLPI; Apollo on the acquisition of CEC Entertainment; the Memphis Redbirds on the sale to the St. Louis Cardinals; Perella Weinberg on the sale of the Flagship Rail Services to Sumitomo; Tower Three on the acquisition of Heritage Golf Group and Värde Partners on the acquisition of FirstCity.
  • Shareholder Activism: He counsels public companies on activist investors and helps defend against proxy contests. Jon has worked extensively with asset managers, REITs and casino or hotel operators facing dissident shareholders and has particular expertise in activist campaigns related to financial services or real estate. Recent assignments have been opposite Corvex, Elliott, FrontFour, JANA, Greenlight, Land & Buildings, Luxor, Orange Capital and Snow Park.

Jon joined Joele Frank in 2012. He previously worked as a financial journalist at Bloomberg News, where he covered mergers, restructuring and private equity and regularly contributed to Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg conferences. Jon was also published in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and Reuters during his seven years as a financial journalist. He began his career in investment banking at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and Credit Suisse. Jon received a BA in political science from Columbia University and an MA in journalism with a focus on business and economic reporting from New York University.
